How Salt Therapy Works: Mechanisms and Benefits

Salt therapy, or halotherapy, is a holistic treatment where microparticles of pharmaceutical-grade salt are inhaled in a controlled environment. A halogenerator grinds the salt into tiny particles and disperses them into the air.

Salt therapy's effectiveness depends on particle size (1 to 5 micrometers), concentration, and exposure duration. The controlled environment maintains consistent salt concentration, enhancing therapeutic benefits.

Microscopic salt particles are believed to have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, helping clear mucus, reduce respiratory inflammation, and kill bacteria, benefiting conditions like asthma, bronchitis, and allergies.

Scientific research into salt therapy has produced many articles detailing the effects and benefits of using salt therapy to treat asthma and other respiratory conditions.

RESPIRATORY CONDITIONS

Pathology of Asthma
  • Salt helps expand the airways by reducing inflammation, thus making it easier for a patient to breath more easily

  • Salt's anti-inflammatory effects help sooth and reduce the symptoms of colds and flu, including blocked sinuses, sore throats, coughs and breathlessness

  • Due to the mucolytic effects, the lungs and airways are able to be cleared of stubborn phlegm and mucus

  • Salt helps to lower IgE levels (immune systems sensitivity), which helps build a natural resistance to allergies

  • Salt helps to kill bacteria and its anti-pathogenic effects assist with eradicating the viruses that are often responsible for colds and chest infections.

SKIN CONDITIONS

Salt's antibacterial and antiseptic properties help alleviate irritation caused by eczema and psoriasis, reducing itching and discomfort over time.

Its anti-inflammatory effects also soothe the skin by minimizing inflammation and soreness.

Additionally, salt therapy helps regulate immune system sensitivity by lowering IgE levels, strengthening the skin’s natural defense against eczema, psoriasis, and similar conditions.

This can lead to fewer flare-ups and a reduced reliance on steroid creams and antibiotics.

⚠️ Important Information: Is Salt Therapy Right for You?

Halotherapy (salt therapy) is widely recognised as a safe and supportive wellness practice for preventive and restorative care. While not a medical treatment, it is valued in many countries — and in some cases, even covered by healthcare systems and insurers.

  • A growing body of clinical research supports the health benefits of salt therapy. However, it may not be suitable for everyone.

  • Salt therapy is not recommended for individuals with:

  • Contagious diseases

  • Fever

  • Open wounds

  • Active cancer

  • Severe hypertension

  • Serious heart conditions or arrhythmia

  • Certain mental health disorders

  • Active tuberculosis

Pregnant individuals are advised to consult their doctor before beginning halotherapy.

If you have any serious medical conditions or health concerns, please speak with your healthcare provider before starting salt therapy.
